Recognition process
Determine whether your profession is regulated in Ireland
Check whether your target profession requires a statutory licence or registration before you can practise in Ireland. CORU's website lists the health and social care professions it regulates. For other professions, check the relevant statutory body (Medical Council, NMBI, Teaching Council, PSI, Dental Council, RIAI, Law Society, or Bar of Ireland). For unregulated roles, a NARIC Ireland qualification comparison is advisory and optional.
Obtain a NARIC Ireland qualification comparison if needed
If your employer or a professional body requests academic evidence, submit a qualification comparison request to NARIC Ireland (operated by QQI). You will need your degree certificate, official transcripts, and identity documents. Certified English translations are required if the originals are in another language. The standard service takes approximately 15 working days from receipt of a complete application.
Apply directly to the relevant professional regulatory body
For regulated professions, submit a registration or recognition application to the competent body: Medical Council for doctors; NMBI for nurses and midwives; Dental Council for dentists; PSI for pharmacists; Teaching Council for teachers; CORU for social workers and health and social care professions; RIAI for architects; Law Society for solicitors; Bar of Ireland for barristers. Each body has its own application portal and fee schedule.
Assemble and submit the required documents
Standard documents required by most Irish professional bodies include: original or certified copy of the degree certificate and official transcripts, certified English translations if documents are not in English, a valid passport or national identity document, a certificate of good standing (or equivalent) from the professional regulatory body in your home country, and evidence of professional indemnity insurance where required. Some bodies also require a recent passport photograph and evidence of relevant post-qualification experience.
Await the assessment decision
Processing times vary by body and by whether your qualifications are from an EEA or non-EEA country. EEA-qualified practitioners in the seven automatic-recognition professions (doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, midwives, architects, and veterinary surgeons) typically receive faster decisions. Non-EEA qualified doctors may need to sit the PRES (Pre-Registration Examination Scheme) before registration with the Medical Council, which extends overall timelines significantly.
Complete any required compensation measures or examinations
If the regulatory body determines that your foreign qualification is substantially different from the Irish equivalent, you may be required to complete an aptitude test, adaptation period, or additional examination. The Medical Council may require the PRES for non-EEA trained doctors. The Teaching Council may require additional subject knowledge or pedagogical assessments. CORU may specify a period of supervised practice. Successfully completing the required measure leads to full registration.
Receive registration and commence practice
On successful assessment, the regulatory body issues full registration (or a conditional registration specifying any ongoing requirements). For regulated professions, you must hold current registration at all times while practising in Ireland. Registration must be renewed annually or as specified by the relevant body. Keep your registration certificate — employers and immigration authorities will request sight of it.

Unregulated qualification route
For professions that are not regulated in Ireland — such as most engineering specialisations, software development, finance, business management, and many technical roles — formal qualification recognition is not a legal requirement before starting work. However, employers may request evidence of academic equivalency. NARIC Ireland (operated by QQI) provides a qualification comparison service that maps a foreign academic qualification to the appropriate level of the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The comparison document is advisory and is widely accepted by Irish employers as evidence of academic standing. The fee is approximately €40–60 (verify current pricing on the QQI website) and the standard service takes approximately 15 working days from receipt of a complete application including degree certificate, official transcripts, and identity documents.

EU framework notes
Ireland implements EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications through the European Communities (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 2017 (S.I. No. 8 of 2017). Under this framework, the seven sectoral professions — doctor, nurse responsible for general care, dental practitioner, pharmacist, architect, veterinary surgeon, and midwife — benefit from automatic recognition when the applicant holds a qualifying certificate from another EEA member state. EU/EEA qualified lawyers can also benefit from provisions for practising home-country law in Ireland under the EU framework. Third-country nationals do not benefit from automatic recognition and must meet the same assessment requirements as applicants from outside the EEA. As English is Ireland's primary working language, language barriers are typically low, but individual regulatory bodies retain the right to request evidence of sufficient English language competence for patient-safety or public-interest reasons.
