Definition

Aufenthaltstitel (German: residence title) is the generic term under German law for all forms of residence authorisation issued to non-EU nationals. Types include the temporary Aufenthaltserlaubnis (residence permit), the permanent Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit), and the Blaue Karte EU (EU Blue Card). The Aufenthaltstitel is issued by the local Ausländerbehörde (foreigners authority) and specifies the purpose of stay, permitted activities, and any restrictions. Since 2011 it is issued as a biometric chip card.
