Determine whether your profession is regulated in Ireland

Check whether your target profession requires a statutory licence or registration before you can practise in Ireland. CORU's website lists the health and social care professions it regulates. For other professions, check the relevant statutory body (Medical Council, NMBI, Teaching Council, PSI, Dental Council, RIAI, Law Society, or Bar of Ireland). For unregulated roles, a NARIC Ireland qualification comparison is advisory and optional.

Obtain a NARIC Ireland qualification comparison if needed

If your employer or a professional body requests academic evidence, submit a qualification comparison request to NARIC Ireland (operated by QQI). You will need your degree certificate, official transcripts, and identity documents. Certified English translations are required if the originals are in another language. The standard service takes approximately 15 working days from receipt of a complete application.

Apply directly to the relevant professional regulatory body

For regulated professions, submit a registration or recognition application to the competent body: Medical Council for doctors; NMBI for nurses and midwives; Dental Council for dentists; PSI for pharmacists; Teaching Council for teachers; CORU for social workers and health and social care professions; RIAI for architects; Law Society for solicitors; Bar of Ireland for barristers. Assemble and submit the required documents

Standard documents required by most Irish professional bodies include: original or certified copy of the degree certificate and official transcripts, certified English translations if documents are not in English, a valid passport or national identity document, a certificate of good standing (or equivalent) from the professional regulatory body in your home country, and evidence of professional indemnity insurance where required. EU framework notes

Ireland implements EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications through the European Communities (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 2017 (S.I. No. 8 of 2017). Under this framework, the seven sectoral professions — doctor, nurse responsible for general care, dental practitioner, pharmacist, architect, veterinary surgeon, and midwife — benefit from automatic recognition when the applicant holds a qualifying certificate from another EEA member state. EU/EEA qualified lawyers can also benefit from provisions for practising home-country law in Ireland under the EU framework. Third-country nationals do not benefit from automatic recognition and must meet the same assessment requirements as applicants from outside the EEA.
