Definition

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a German residence permit introduced in 2024 under the Skilled Immigration Act reform. It enables qualified non-EU nationals to enter Germany for up to one year to search for suitable employment, without needing a concrete job offer before arrival. Applicants score points across four criteria: professional qualification, language proficiency, work experience, and age. A minimum score is required, unless the applicant holds a recognised degree from a German university or has worked in Germany before. Holders may work up to 20 hours per week on a trial basis during the job search period.
