Recognition bodies
NARIC Spain — Centro Nacional de Información y Documentación Educativa
AcademicSpain's NARIC centre, operated by the Ministry of Education, issues declaraciones de equivalencia de nivel académico that compare foreign higher-education degrees to the equivalent Spanish educational level. This is the route for non-regulated qualifications and is accepted by many employers as evidence of degree equivalence.

Subdirección General de Títulos — Ministry of Education
AcademicThe unit within the Ministry of Education that processes formal homologación (equivalence to a Spanish degree title) and convalidación (partial credit recognition) applications. Homologación is required for degrees in regulated professions where the Colegio Profesional demands an equivalent Spanish qualification before admitting a foreign applicant.

Organización Médica Colegial (OMC) — Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales de Médicos
Regulated professionFederal umbrella body for Spain's provincial medical colleges. Following homologación of their foreign medical degree, overseas-qualified doctors must register with the Colegio in the province where they intend to practise. EU/EEA doctors with a PQD-qualifying degree may register directly without prior Ministry homologación.

Consejo General de Colegios de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos
Regulated professionNational body overseeing Spain's dental colleges. Registration with the relevant regional college is required to practise dentistry. EU/EEA dentists benefit from automatic recognition under PQD; third-country dentists must first complete Ministry homologación.

Consejo General de Enfermería
Regulated professionNational council for Spain's nursing colleges. Overseas-qualified nurses must obtain Colegio registration before practising. EU/EEA nurses with automatic-recognition-qualifying credentials apply directly; third-country nurses require homologación from the Ministry of Education first.

Recognition process
Determine whether your target profession is regulated in Spain
Many professions in Spain — including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, architecture, and law — require Colegio Profesional membership and, for third-country applicants, a prior formal degree equivalence decision (homologación) from the Ministry of Education. Check the Ministry of Education's RERUE portal for the current regulated-profession list before proceeding.
Choose the correct recognition pathway
If your degree is for a regulated profession and you trained outside the EEA, you need homologación (equivalence to the Spanish degree) from the Subdirección General de Títulos. If you are an EEA/EU-trained professional in one of the seven automatic-recognition professions (doctor, dentist, pharmacist, nurse, vet, midwife, architect), you may apply directly to the relevant Colegio under the PQD general-system route. For non-regulated qualifications, NARIC Spain's declaración de nivel is usually sufficient for employers.
Assemble your documents
For homologación applications, the standard pack includes: original degree certificate and official transcripts, a sworn Spanish translation (traducción jurada) by a translator officially accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, passport or identity document copy, and proof of payment of the official fee. Certain documents issued outside the EU may also require an Apostille or full legalisation depending on the issuing country's status under the Hague Convention.
Submit the application and pay the fee
Applications for homologación are submitted electronically through the Sede Electrónica of the Ministry of Education. Pay the official fee — currently approximately €195 for university-level degrees (verify the current amount on the official portal before payment, as it is updated periodically). Submit the complete documentation pack; incomplete applications extend processing times significantly.
Await the Ministry's resolution
The Ministry of Education reviews the application and issues one of three outcomes: a resolution granting equivalence (homologación granted), a resolution granting partial equivalence with compensatory measures (prueba de aptitud or supervised adaptation period), or a refusal. Processing times for third-country applicants are typically 3–6 months, though Ministry backlogs can extend this substantially. The Ministry must provide written reasons for any refusal.
Complete any compensatory measures if required
If partial equivalence is granted with compensatory measures, the applicant must complete either an aptitude test (prueba de aptitud) or a supervised adaptation period (período de prácticas). The adaptation period may last up to three years. Successful completion of the compensatory measure leads to full homologación. For some professions, the Colegio rather than the Ministry administers the test.
Register with the relevant Colegio Profesional
Once homologación is obtained, register with the Colegio Profesional in the autonomous community where you plan to work. This is a separate step from homologación and involves its own registration forms, fees, and documentation requirements. Some autonomous communities impose additional requirements, particularly for healthcare professions. Colegio membership is a legal requirement to practise regulated professions in Spain — homologación alone does not confer the right to practise.

Typical timelines
05
Unregulated qualification route
For professions not regulated in Spain — including most IT roles, business management, finance, and many technical specialities — formal homologación is not a legal requirement before starting work. Instead, applicants can obtain a "declaración de equivalencia de nivel académico" from NARIC Spain, which assesses the foreign degree against the equivalent Spanish educational level (e.g., Grado, Máster, Doctorado). This document is not a title equivalence and does not confer the right to use a protected professional title, but it is widely accepted by employers and immigration authorities as evidence of the applicant's educational level. The process requires the same sworn translation (traducción jurada) and identity documents as the full homologación route, but the fee and processing time are lower.

EU framework notes
Spain implements EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications through Real Decreto 581/2017. For the seven professions covered by automatic recognition — doctor, nurse, dentist, pharmacist, veterinary surgeon, midwife, and architect — EU/EEA nationals who hold qualifying credentials may register with the relevant Colegio Profesional without undergoing Ministry homologación. Third-country nationals (non-EU/EEA) do not benefit from automatic recognition and must go through the full homologación route via the Ministry of Education before Colegio registration is possible. Spain has historically applied longer processing times for third-country applicants compared to EU-qualified professionals. The general-system route under PQD applies to EEA professionals in regulated professions not covered by automatic recognition, with the Colegio or relevant authority responsible for the assessment.

Warnings
