Definition

An NIE is the personal identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain. It is used across immigration, tax, payroll, banking, and many civil-administration systems, which means a person may need it even before they hold their final long-term card. The NIE is not the same thing as the TIE card, because the NIE is the number itself while the TIE is the physical residence card that may display it.
