Qualification recognition

Recognising qualifications in Netherlands

The Netherlands operates a two-track recognition system. Academic and higher-education qualifications are evaluated by Nuffic (the Dutch ENIC-NARIC centre), which issues an Internationaal Diplomawaardering (IDW) statement comparing a foreign credential to its Dutch equivalent. Regulated professions — most significantly all individual healthcare roles — are gated through the BIG register (Beroepen in de Individuele Gezondheidszorg), which is the single statutory entry point before a professional can legally practise. The Netherlands implements EU Directive 2005/36/EC via the Wet BIG for healthcare and via separate sector legislation for other regulated professions; automatic recognition applies for the seven Directive-covered professions when the qualification was obtained in another EEA member state.

Recognition process

1

Determine whether your profession is regulated

Check the Dutch government's regulated-professions portal to see whether your profession requires a licence or registration before you can practise in the Netherlands. If the profession is regulated, identify the governing body; if it is unregulated, proceed directly to a Nuffic IDW evaluation.

2

For healthcare professions: apply to the BIG register

Submit a BIG registration application via the online portal at bigregister.nl. You will need: certified copies of your degree and diploma, evidence of language proficiency (Dutch B2 is required for patient-facing roles), proof of work experience, and an identity document. The BIG register has a legal processing deadline of 8 weeks for complete applications.

3

For other regulated professions: contact the relevant professional body

Each regulated profession outside healthcare has its own governing body with a separate recognition procedure. For architecture, apply to Bureau Architectenregister. For law, contact the Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten (note: non-EU lawyers undergo a national-only recognition process; EU lawyers may register under the EU Lawyers Directive). For accountancy, contact NBA.

4

For unregulated professions: request a Nuffic IDW credential evaluation

Apply for an Internationaal Diplomawaardering (IDW) from Nuffic. Submit your diploma, transcripts, and a certified translation if the documents are not in Dutch, English, French, or German. The IDW produces a statement comparing your qualification to the Dutch equivalent level (e.g., bachelor's, master's). Most Dutch employers in unregulated fields request an IDW or equivalent.

5

Await the assessment decision

The BIG register has a statutory 8-week processing deadline for complete healthcare applications. Nuffic IDW evaluations typically take 4–8 weeks. Other professional bodies publish their own timelines. If your application is incomplete, the clock restarts after you supply the missing documents.

6

Receive your BIG registration number or recognition decision

Successful healthcare applicants receive a BIG registration number that can be verified publicly in the BIG register online. Nuffic IDW applicants receive a written evaluation statement. Other professional bodies issue a recognition certificate or registration confirmation. If gaps are identified — for example, missing competences — you may be required to complete a bridging programme or sit an aptitude test before registration is granted.

7

Complete a bridging programme or aptitude test if required

Where the recognition body identifies material gaps between your foreign qualification and Dutch requirements, you will be directed to a bridging course or aptitude test. For healthcare, this is coordinated by the BIG register or a designated training institution. Duration typically ranges from 3 to 12 months depending on the identified gaps.

04

Typical timelines

Nuffic IDW credential evaluation 4–8 weeks from receipt of complete documents
BIG register application — complete application 8 weeks (statutory legal deadline)
Bridging programme or aptitude test (if required) 3–12 months depending on identified gaps

05

Unregulated qualification route

For professions that are not regulated in the Netherlands, there is no mandatory recognition process — you may work freely once you have the appropriate work permit. However, Dutch employers commonly request an Internationaal Diplomawaardering (IDW) issued by Nuffic as an advisory comparability statement. The IDW compares your foreign qualification to the nearest Dutch level (MBO, HBO bachelor's, WO bachelor's, master's, or doctorate) and is used by employers and educational institutions as an informal benchmark. The standard IDW costs approximately EUR 105 and takes 4–8 weeks. The evaluation is advisory only: it is not a legally binding recognition decision and does not confer a right to use a Dutch title.

06

EU framework notes

The Netherlands implements EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications. Automatic recognition applies to seven professions qualified in another EEA member state: doctors, nurses responsible for general care, dental practitioners, veterinary surgeons, midwives, pharmacists, and architects. For these professions, the relevant governing body (BIG register for healthcare; Bureau Architectenregister for architects) must recognise the EEA-issued qualification without a comparability assessment, provided the host-country requirements for the qualification are met. For all other regulated professions, the general system applies and the relevant professional body decides. Third-country nationals (qualified outside the EEA) do not benefit from automatic recognition and must go through the national recognition procedure of the applicable governing body.

Warnings

Warning

薪资和费用数字具有日期敏感性

IND按滚动年度或半年周期发布工作路径门槛和费用,因此在前一申请年度有效的薪资规划,在合同开始日期或申请日期变化时可能失效。

Warning

定向年并非面向所有人的开放求职签证

荷兰确有求职路径,但仅限于特定毕业生、博士和科研群体。不具备该背景的人不应假设可以先行入境再开始求职。

Warning

GVVA案件的推进速度可能慢于担保机构主导的申请

GVVA处理除IND决定外还依赖UWV劳动力市场建议,因此该路径在结构上不如经认可担保机构的知识移民申请流程精简。
