SAIA — Slovak Academic Information Agency (Slovenská akademická informačná agentúra)
AcademicSlovakia's NARIC contact point. SAIA provides information and guidance on the recognition of foreign qualifications in Slovakia but does not issue recognition decisions itself. Applicants are advised on which Slovak university to approach for nostrifikácia and what documents are required.

Individual Slovak universities (in the relevant academic field)
AcademicHigher-education nostrifikácia is handled by the Slovak public university offering a degree programme in the same field as the degree being recognised. The applicant must identify and apply to the appropriate university. There is no single central university for all fields. On successful assessment, the university issues a nostrifikačná doložka (recognition certificate).

Recognition process
Determine whether your profession is regulated in Slovakia
Establish first whether your target profession requires a licence to practise in Slovakia. Regulated professions (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, architecture, law, civil engineering) require formal recognition before you can work. Unregulated professions do not legally require nostrifikácia, but Slovak employers frequently ask for the nostrifikačná doložka even for non-regulated roles. SAIA can advise on whether your profession is regulated.
Identify the competent Slovak university in your academic field
For higher-education degrees, contact SAIA or research directly which Slovak university offers a degree programme in the same field as yours. Only that university can assess and issue the nostrifikačná doložka for your degree. For secondary-school leaving certificates, contact the relevant regional school office (krajský školský úrad). There is no single central university — finding the right institution is the applicant's responsibility.
Prepare and submit the nostrifikácia application
Gather the original degree certificate, official academic transcript, a certified Slovak translation by a súdny prekladateľ/súdny tlmočník (court-appointed sworn translator), apostille or legalisation of the original document as applicable, and the university's application form. Submit to the relevant faculty office and pay the administrative fee. The legal deadline for the university's decision is 30–60 days from receipt of a complete application.
Complete any required supplementary examinations
The assessing university may require additional examinations if it identifies significant differences between your curriculum and Slovak degree standards. These must be completed before the nostrifikačná doložka is issued. Supplementary examination requirements and timelines vary by university and academic field.
Receive the nostrifikačná doložka
If the assessment is successful and any supplementary examinations have been passed, the university issues a nostrifikačná doložka (recognition certificate) confirming that your foreign degree is equivalent to the corresponding Slovak degree. Keep the original and certified copies — employers and professional chambers will request them.
Register with the professional chamber (regulated professions only)
For regulated professions, present the nostrifikačná doložka to the relevant professional chamber (SLK, SKZL, SLKM, SKSPA, SKA, SAK, SKSI) and complete the chamber registration process. For EEA-trained practitioners in the seven automatic-recognition professions, apply directly to the chamber under the automatic route without needing nostrifikácia first.

Typical timelines
05
Unregulated qualification route
For professions not regulated in Slovakia — such as many IT, business, and management roles — formal recognition is not legally required before starting work. However, Slovak employers frequently request the nostrifikačná doložka (university recognition certificate) even for unregulated positions. Unlike some other EU countries, Slovakia does not issue a simple comparability certificate for unregulated qualifications. The standard path for both regulated and unregulated higher-education degrees is university nostrifikácia. SAIA (the Slovak Academic Information Agency) provides guidance but does not itself issue recognition decisions.
06
EU framework notes
Slovakia implements the EU Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC (as amended by 2013/55/EU) through Zákon č. 422/2015 Z.z. o uznávaní dokladov o vzdelaní a o uznávaní odborných kvalifikácií a o zmene a doplnení niektorých zákonov (Act on Recognition of Education Documents and Professional Qualifications). For the seven professions covered by the automatic recognition regime — doctor, nurse responsible for general care, dental practitioner, veterinary surgeon, midwife, pharmacist, and architect — EEA-trained practitioners receive recognition on production of the qualifying diploma without a substantive content assessment. Third-country nationals do not benefit from automatic recognition and must complete nostrifikácia at a Slovak university before seeking professional chamber registration.

Warnings
